Disaster Recovery options, recommendations please

Post by andyb »

We currently use Backup & Replication for our on-prem VMware vSphere environment. We do have an AWS environment but our critical servers have not all been migrated yet and will be some time before they are. I would love to get some guidance, opinions, options, etc. on how best to handle a DR scenario in which we can get critical servers up and running in AWS.

If we were to lose power locally and all connections to that environment were severed, what would be the most efficient way to get our critical servers up and running in AWS? We use Object Storage in our environment, specifically an S3 bucket in the Capacity Tier configuration. I've tested the "Restore to Amazon EC2..." functionality and while it works, it takes far too long (10-12 hours in our testing) and the Object Storage (Capacity Tier) backups are not nearly recent enough to give us a proper backup.

We want to do this properly and not in a convoluted, band-aid manner. Is anyone else in a similar environment? Would AWS VTL Gateway be a viable option or is there a better one? Thanks in advance!

Just an idea that is maybe out of the box. I will let other comment about AWS directly.

VMware Cloud on AWS can be used nearly as any VMware environment and you can replicate our workloads from or to the nevioronment and do a planned failover or and emergency failover with and without failover plans. Veeam Availability Orchestrator works as well (beside the Virtual lab which is not supported for both products at VMware Cloud on AWS as we do not get the network change rights and NFS on the vcenter there).

Thanks, Andreas. While we have looked into VMware Cloud and do believe it would fit our DR needs, we're uncertain if that's the direction we ultimately want to go from a cost perspective. Appreciate the insight and info!

Did you ever figure this out? I backup Hyper-v vm's to aws and I am trying to figure out what to do if I lose everything locally. How do I even begin to get things up and running either locally or in the cloud.
