Backup proxy and backup storage access

Post by tntteam »

Hello there,

We are in the process of migrating our storage arrays where our backups are located. Previously, our storage arrays were on fiber channel network, so the veeam backup server also has a FC adapter to access storage.
We have a vsan and use veeam proxy appliances to backup VMs : data is read from vsan via backup proxy and sent via ethernet network we will call "general network" to veeam backup server.

We are now deploying an iscsi storage array that veeam backup server will not have access to (separate ethernet network we will call "iscsi network" on separate datacenter).
But the proxy appliances can access the iscsi network.

Would this work?
Another way to ask is, can I do backup, restore and applicative restore jobs without limitations if the veeam backup server doesn't have access to backup storage, only backup proxy can access it ?

Thanks

Hello,
yes, that works. That's one of the reasons why roles can be installed on different machines.

File- and application restore are done via network (IP). The storage connection is irrelevant. Full VM / disk restore can work with the remote proxy (the backup server does not need access to the storage)

Best regards,
Hannes
