Licensing Issue with Veeam ONE v10 (VUL)

Post by thrillride »

Hello,

we´ve got a licensing issue with Veeam ONE v10 and Veeam Backup & Replication v10.
We´ve bought the Veeam Availability Suite with 16 VUL-Licenses (so 160 instances) to backup and monitor our vmware infrastructure.

In Veeam B&R we´ve backed up 20 VMs. Also the license information displays the 20 used licenses.
In Veeam ONE we have no active inclusion rules and a exclusion rule where all objects in "Infrastructure View" and "Business View" are excluded.

Although Veeam ONE displayed, that 88 licenses (instances and vms) are used - not 20.

So now my questions:
- why 88 licenses (and not 20)?
- which objects counts towards the licensing and what is an concrete object (e.g. vm, esx, ...)?

Thanks and regards

Hi Thrillride,

Could you please open a support case so our engineers could take a look at it?

Thanks

Hi wishr,

tank you for your quick response.

At the moment we´re also corresponding with our veeam contact. So i think we´re going to open a support case in near future.

Maybe you could answer my question of what concrete is an object (for Veeam ONE)?
It´s a bit vaguely formulated in this document: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/archive/on ... jects.html

Yes, sure.

In the case with VUL, which is basically an instance-based license, Veeam ONE consumes instances for each protected and/or monitored "workload" - a VM, a physical machine, etc.

So, is the esx host-Maschine on which the vm resides also an license consumpting object and each linked datastore, or only the vm itself?

In the meantime we've opened a support case and locking forward that the support team is able to clarify the issue.

Maybe you can point out the most common workloads in bullet points - especially the "etc." in your post.

I guess that could help to estimate and comprehend the license consumption of Veeam ONE in general.

Thanks again and regards

Hi Thrillride,

Could you please share your case ID? I'll take a look at it.

Only VMs and other workloads themselves consume licenses. It could be also a cloud VM, a physical machine, or a file share - typically we call these "workloads". If a workload is monitored by VONE, or protected by VBR that is, in turn, monitored by Veeam ONE this will lead to instances consumption, as described in the Per Instance Licensing section of the Deployment Guide.

Thanks

Hi wishr,

the veeam support has resolved the issue.
For shame only the 10a Patch was missing on our system.
After upgrade to Veeam ONE 10a the licensing consumption is now correct.

Thanks to you and the support team.
