Backup and esx-management vlans against firewall.

Post by vlad_diverse »

Hi all, I have vSAN cluster and hot-add proxies, all work fine with up to 1.5 GB/s throughput rate. But file server is not on vSAN, but iSCSI to old OceanStore without HyperSnap license.
Crated proxy on esxi management vlan for ndb, but repository is on backup vlan. Backup speeds are ~70MB/s.
Any tips or tricks to make it faster?

Hello,
when you talk about file server, are you talking about NAS backup? https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=110

Is the VSAN and ESXi part relevant for the question?

Best regards,
Hannes

Hi Hannes,
No, OceanStor is connected via iSCSI to all ESXi hosts in a cluster and VMFS datastore is mounted.
File server VM is using this datastore.
Cheers,
Vlad

okay... and the ESXi management ports are 10GBit/s or slower? As the title mentions a firewall.. there is a firewall somewhere (I don't see where) in between that also reduces speed?

I would also look at the "bottleneck" which is displayed in job statistics and why don't give a chance to HotAdd mode? At least, we know you get better processing rate of other VMs in HotAdd.

Thanks!

Hi Hannes,
Esxi management ports are on 10Gbit/s, so is proxy I have created for this on this management vlan. but repository is on different - backup vlan. On proxy I have main network with default gateway on ESXi management network and second network, without default gateway on backup vlan, but I have doubts that proxy sends data to the repository using backup network.
Thanks

Hi PetrM,
Bottleneck is a source, how to give a chance to HotAdd mode? This datastore is not on vSAN, but iSCSI attached SAN.

Hi Vladimir,

Not sure I understand what kind of limitation are you talking about, there is no requirement to run VMs on vSAN to process them in HotAdd. Please have a look at this page to get the full list of limitations for HotAdd.

If you want to use a dedicated network for backup data traffic, then you can select the preferred network in Global Network Traffic rules.

Thanks!

I have logged a call and support was able to fix this problem. If your proxy is located on vSAN, you cannot HotAdd from VMFS volume, if file more than 2TB. https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/75202
We have moved proxy to the same iSCSI connected VMFS, where our large file server is located and was able to do HotAdd.
Throughput has increased from 70 Mb/s to 500 Mb/s. Me - very happy!

Thanks to Petr to insist on HotAdd. Backup window now has dramatically decreased.
