Veeam backup fails (Failed to create volume snapshot)

Post by Janarxd »

Hey! This is my 1st time using Veeam. I'm trying to do a full backup to my VM.

System Ubuntu 20.10
Veeam that I installed "veeam-release-deb_1.0.7_amd64.deb"

Image

Some command outputs:

uname -r
5.8.0-45-generic

apt search linux-headers-$(uname -r)
Sorting... Done
Full Text Search... Done
linux-headers-5.8.0-45-generic/groovy-updates,groovy-security,now 5.8.0-45.51 amd64 [installed]
Linux kernel headers for version 5.8.0 on 64 bit x86 SMP

Veeamsnap is already the newest version (5.0.0.4318).

Not sure what I should do now. Maybe anyone can help me?

Hello! This is because of kernel 5.8... please review the Release Notes document, it specifically covers Ubuntu 20.10 in the Limitations section. Thanks!

Hello! Thanks for the quick reply. Are you able to link me the document? I'm having a hard time solving this problem.

"The veeam-nosnap_5.0.0.4318_amd64.deb package is required." Where can I download such file?

Thanks!
Quick question. I have some snapshots of the VM in my server. Right now I can't get past this screen.
Image
Would I be able to do entire machine backup when I delete the snapshots or can I only do file level backup as shown as on the picture?

Only file level backup is possible with kernel versions 8.5 and later.

I have kernel version 5.8.0-45-generic. But I need full machine backup, not file level only. Right now it's not letting me continue.

I really need full machine backup.

Your out of luck then, because Linux kernel developers removed a feature that enabled it.
But fingers crossed, it will be put back in one of the future kernel updates.

It's a webserver, I could maybe just back up all the folders that Veeam lets me choose. Not sure how hard it would be to restore my VM if something happens to it though.
Why did the feature get removed?

So there's no way kernel 5.8 can back up full machine. I know I can't downgrade my Ubuntu version but is it possible to downgrade kernel and make full machine backup work? Or do I need to install new Ubuntu OS? In that case, what Ubuntu version would you recommend that supports full machine backup. Sorry if what I say is confusing. Still really new into this topic.

Thanks for the help so far, really appreciated!

Supported Ubuntu Versions are documented in the Agent Guide:
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/agent ... tml?ver=50

I‘m not a linux expert. I think, it‘s possible to downgrade a kernel, if it‘s supported with the ubuntu version you are on. A short google search should help you to find your needed informations.
This question should be better ask in dedicated linux community forums.

I installed Ubuntu 20.10 just recently on new VM so I don't have any previous Kernel versions installed (only 5.8 ). I watched some guides that told to boot into old kernel and then remove desired kernel and headers: sudo apt remove linux-image-versionnrhere-generic linux-headers-versionnrhere-generic.
I can't downgrade like that, I think I can't do it at all.

May be consider installing the previous Ubuntu LTS release (18.04) instead? This one will last you for many years until it's EOL in 2028.

I probably will go that route yes. Full machine backup should work when I install "veeam-release-deb_1.0.7_amd64.deb" right?

You don’t have to go all the way back to 18.04 (bionic).

The most recent LTS is 20.04 (focal), and it works perfectly. It’s EOL has not even been announced yet. 20.04 also comes with a 5.4 kernel which contains a good number of performance enhancements, and is fully supported with Veeam Agent for Linux.

Thanks Preben, somehow when I searched 20.04 showed as using a higher kernel version... but you are right.

Is this why a recent kernel update for CentOS 7 just broke my Linux VeeamZIP's? Is there a fix or just waiting on a supported kernel?

Hi,

It's unlikely that CentOS 7 was affected by the issue since it uses kernel v3.x by default. However, if you have manually upgraded to a later kernel (v4 or v5) then it might be the reason why things broke. In order figure out what exactly has happened, I suggest you to open a support case and post your case ID here.

Thanks!
