Backup copy transaction log retention

Post by mkretzer »

Hi,

a question about transaction log retention in copy jobs: Is the retention for these always the same as for the image backups in the copy job?

So if we have 30 days of backups on the primary backup system but 90 days on the copy target (immediate mode, with transaction backups) we can do point in time restores for the last 90 days from the backup copy?

Hi Markus, right, your understanding is generally correct, just keep in mind two types of transaction logs retention. Basically, backup copy job copies what you have on source and retains logs with the corresponding image-level backups.

Hello,

thats the thing - these two options do not exist for copy jobs, correct?
I think the feature to be able to set log retention on the copy job would be beneficial!

There are no separate retention settings for transaction logs in backup copy jobs, right - logs are kept according to the image-level backups retention. Do you mean you would like to keep less logs restore points than you have for the VM itself?
