iSCSI on QNAP Devices

Post by JamesieA »

Has anyone configured a ReFS drive on a Windows server from an iSCSI target on a QNAP NAS?

We're currently backing up to QNAP devices using SMB shares, but are looking to move to iSCSI to take advantage of ReFS. Reading Veeam's best practices, I've had no problems in formatting it with 64KB block size, but I'm not sure about configuring a 256KB block size on the LUN.

The only thing I can find ont he QNAP is the sector size, which can be 512 bytes or 4K. Would one be better than the other? Any issues with this setting?

Hello,
the block size of the LUN has very little impact on the overall speed. If the option is not available, the defaults are fine (no need to tune / search for that setting).

Best regards,

works fine.

we use a dedicated directly connected 10gb port (9000 MTU) to mount the iscsi target on a windows server. Format the disk with REFS with 64kb block size.

On the qnap, only run the iscsi service on the dedicated network adapter (if you go that way). otherwise make sure you secure it with CHAP.

I didn't get any other info other than the reply from Hannes, so left the LUN with a 4KB sector size and formatted in Windows with 64KB block size. We've seen no issues with that.
