SOBR Tiering with encrypted backups

Post by ajgball »

I have found when offloading to object storage that I can get roughly 2:1 saved.

So I I read 100GB of local backup files then only 50GB will be transferred to object Storage. This is expected behaviour due to the way Veeam is checking for duplicate blocks before sending data to Object Storage.

However I have a customer who has encrypted all the data in their repository and while tiering their data to Azure/object storage I am only seeing 1.2:1 saving in data uploaded.

So my question is, will encrypting the local backup repository data (performance tier) have an affect on the dedupe seen in the capacity tier ?

No, enabling encryption does not affect space savings. What type of VMs are you offloading to object storage? May be VMs running highly transactional applications that produce big amount of unique data? Thanks!

I think you are correct veremin, high transactional unique data.

thank you for clarifying.
