Community Edition: Replace tape drive

Post by plata »

Hello.

I've found the guide on how to replace a tape device on a media pool.
But when I get to the step where I would add the new tape drive there's a warning that Veeam B&R Enterprise edition is required.

Is there a way that supports replacing a standalone tape drive when using the Community Edition?

Hi Patrick,

In Community Edition, you can have only one device in mediapool.
So what you can do here - remove the old device first and the add the new one.

Thanks!

Great, thanks!

I didn't think to try it this way around.

Patrick,

Let us know if you have any additional questions.
Also, asked Documentation team to update the docs to make Tape device replacement more clear for Community edition users.

Thanks!

Hello, this is rather embarassing.

Since I've asked this question I upgraded my Veeam environment from Community Edition version 10 to 11 but just didn't get around to actually replacing my old tape drive.
Now that I gave it another go I ran into another obstacle: When I'm editing the Media Pool and go to "Tapes" -> "Managing Libraries..." the button "Add..." is greyed out (as expected). If I select the tape drive I want to replace the "Remove" button is enabled. But if I click on it I get prompted that I have to add a new tape device to assign tapes to first.

So is there a way out of this Catch-22 situation?

Hi, sounds like this will require opening a support case and have them remove from the configuration manually...
Or you can just do a clean install of the product into a fresh database, and reconfigure everything - might be faster.

Thanks for the feedback! We will check this behavior with QA team and make the required corrections - change of the drive should be somehow affected by the license.
