Backup Linux Red Hat VM & Linux MS SQL VM

Post by asifganai »

Hi All,
I would like to know if it is possible to backup Linux Red Hat VM as a whole with Veeam and to backup Linux MS SQL VM. Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Hello Asif,

You can back up any VM, I'd suggest to have a look at this quick start guide. I'd also recommend to consider VMware Tools quiescence and pre-freeze/post-thaw scripts to bring file system and application data to a consistent state on Linux based VMs.

Thanks!

Basically the scenario is as following.
MSSQL database running on a Linux Red Hat Virtual Machine. I need to backup both the VM and the database residing over.
Will VMware Tools quiescence help here or you suggest taking backup via linux agent? Please share your suggestions.

Linux doesn‘t have VSS Integration.
MS SQL on Linux will not be covered from VmWare tools Quiscense.

The Veeam supported way is to start a script which stops the sql services before the backup. Or write a script to export database dumps to a second disk. You can then backup this disk with Veeam.
But there is no Hot Application consistent backup of mssql on linux Server with Veeam VM or Veeam Agent.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/re ... d-versions
Linux does not provide a VSS framework and therefore SQL Writer is not available on Linux
