Windows Licensing when using Veeam to replicate to a 2nd server?

Post by lucky77713 »

Good morning,

This will be our first time using Veeam for a client, so please bare with me. The scenario is that we plan on having 2 servers. One for hosting the vm's and 1 for the replicated vm's. We plan on having the main server running Windows 2019 server with Hyper-V running the dc,1 sql server and 1 server for their POS. We've tested this with the trial licenses and it seems to work and replicate perfectly.

My question is about windows licensing. I know 2019 Standard comes with 1 license for the main server and 1 for a single VM. I'm assuming we will need to buy 2 more licenses for the 2nd and 3rd vm's on the main server. Also we will need 1 license for the server that will house the replicated vm's. My question is do I need to buy licenses for the replicated vm's to be compliant with windows licensing?

am I missing something else that you know of? Any help is appreciated.

Hello Lucas and welcome to Veeam R&D forums,

With Veeam you need to license only the protected workload: the one that gets backed up or replicated. Thanks!

Hello Lucas,

you need to check with you Microsoft licensing specialist regarding the Windows and Microsoft licenses. This is a topic that Veeam can not comment on as it depends on a lot of factors like EULA and your license contracts and type.

Dima shared above the Veeam license side.
