Veeam 9.5 - SQL database restore from tape

veeam 9.5
I want to restore a single SQL database from a tape. Is this the same step than a restore from disk ? Or it's more harder?

Backups should be staged to Repository first in this case. Then you can launch Veeam Explorer for SQL against it.

sorry if my question is stupid,
but, on the tape(s), there is all my full backup, all vm, and the specific VM which have sql databases, and I need only one of them. What will do this "restore from repository" ?
On the link step 2, they ask to choose the machine to restore?
This will restore the whole VM ? I think not?

Note that we are restoring VM backup from tape, not decompressing original VM files from backup in this case.
Entire backup of said VM will be copied from Tape to selected Repository and put into Disk(Imported) node in VBR Console.

Ok, this mean we could not restore directly from tape, first the tape or part of the tape, in my case the VM where is the SQL DB should be "copied" on disk.
So if I understand well, I need pretty hudge gig free (this VM is not the smallest one). And then from this "repository" as disk now, I could restore my single DB? i'm right?

It is important to configure „per machine backup files“ on your backup Repo, if you use Tape. It will optimize the restore speed (and restore space usage) a lot.

My backup repository is a NAS, so i'm fine with the first option. But what will be the name of the "restore" I mean, I do not see any option to give myself a name? Shall this "restore back from tape to repository" will create a new file with a random name? I do not want that it erase something ?

Veeam will copy the files from the tape to this path with the original Name.
Why not choose a new folder without any content? Then you will not have any problems.

This seems like a good tip.I don't see option "per machine backup files" for tapes?Or do I have to do it on repository that is being used by tape?
My setup is following: Local SMB NAS added to SOBR, and jobs stored in same repository are also used by tapes.

In your case, you have to configure "per machine Backup Files" in your SOBR properties. This way, each VM has it's own backup chain on the tape.
If you have existing backup jobs, you need to do an active full backup to change the "per Job Chain" to "per machine Chain".

If you need to restore files or application data from a vm, you don't have to copy a huge vbk back to the repo with all vm inside. Only a small vbk which contains your desired vm.

What you have to do to optimize restore Speed and Space from tape:

1.) Change "per machines Backup Chain" in the SOBR --> https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=110
2.) Run an active Full Backup --> Chain will change to "per machine Backup Files"
3.) Run the Tape Job --> Tape contains now independent backup files for each vm

my restore in the repo is on going (and very well)
Here my step : I do not create another repository because I need to trust veeam and your advice isnt it?
So I choose the option by defaut, and during the restore of the vbk, it simply duplicate the folder name with a _1 which is just perfect for me, new folder, no risk.
The size of the restore is no so big, I believe the option about "per machines backup chain" is set up (But I searched this option on my backup job, and I do not find it, I will dig that latter)
Job is not finish, but the first step is working (now just hope this will not to long, our network schema is not the best in the world)

Thanks for update.
Just for the record, Per-machine backup files is a setting of Backup Repository you are going to keep backups at.

Weird or normal think, on the Home tab, and on my backup job disk menu, I saw a new line "Disk (imported)" and on it, there is my restore from tape, is this the normal way?
This "disk (imported) will stay until I delete the vbk file ? or?

Veeam automatically Imports newly appeared backup file for ease of use
You can right click it and "Remove from configuration" to let Veeam "forget" about it(keeping the files), or "Remove from Disk" for complete backup file deletion from disk.
