Import from Veeam1 server into Veeam2?

Post by donceto »

Hello there, I got strange scenario for today:

My old esxi server has died, and there were a 3 VMs, one of them was Veeam B&R. The backup repository was my NAS, which is OK (I have all full and incremental backups) all VIB and VBK are healthy.

Today I find similiar server, I have installed esxi, and 1 VM which is Veeam B&R. Please tell me how is the right way to import entire VM's from NAS? When I have choose that NAS for backup repository, Veeam make automatically imported backup jobs, which are my old VM.

I'm scared to miss something, and lose even that I have. Should I create first dummy VM's to (new) esxi? Or I can import from here?

Any experience with similar scenario? Thanks!

Hello,

You should add the repository into Backup Infrastructure of a new Veeam B&R server and select the corresponding checkbox to import backups automatically. After that, just follow the entire VM restore wizard.

Thanks!

Thank you @PetrM

Exactly what you said, I have added (old) repository to a (new) Veeam B&R, select checkbox to import backups. But now I dont have "Full VM Restore" option, I dont have options like that of imported backups. Do you have maybe similiar experience? What should I do to get VM Restore option? Thanks!

Restore options are no different for Imported backups.
Can you please check what is under right click on Disk(Imported) > JobName > VMName?

@Egor Yakovlev, thank you.

Under Disk(Imported) > JobName> vmname i have those option:

At the moment I'm trying with 3rd option to convert backup into vmdk, and attach it to new dummy VM. Maybe that will be right scenario, because I don't have other option.

Why are using a third party tool?
Veeam has a nice extractor utility for it‘s own backup files :)
You will get all disk files and vm configuration files to import manually to the hypervisor and register the vm.

https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=110

The tool can be found on Veeam Download Page.

Thank you @Mildur :)

You didn't understand me right, when I said that I will try with 3rd option, i mean 3rd option from a Veeam (picture), that is "Export disk content as virtual disks...".

And now I have vmdk file directly imported into datastore folder, and at newly created VM I have attached that disk, and domain controller is working. Great job!

For anyone who is reading this post, and they are missing "Full VM Restore", should use this scenario, because it works.

By the way, looks like those servers were processed by Veeam Agent for Windows and not by backup job for VMware VMs. One more workaround might be Instant Recovery, but don't forget to finalize the session to avoid data loss.

Thanks!

+1 to Petr: screenshot clearly shows Agent-based backups.
Those do not have "Full VM Restore" as it is not virtual. Use Instant Restore to convert said machines to virtual ones instantly, or using "convert disk" for manual configuration.
Not sure what was the initial idea to protect VMs with agents, but note that you can backup VMs 100% agentless(Backup>Virtual machine>VMware) and they give slightly different set of restore options against agent-based backups(Backup>Windows computer), which are typically used for physical machines and VMs with tricky configurations.

+1 to PetrM, yeah that is clear that previous Veeam B&R was configured with agent-based backups. I didn't have a chance to see that, because old veeam was gone already. So, this is working scenario from lost veeam and target server, with agent-based backups, to new VM environment :)

Thank you guys! Cheers
