SQL Error during upgrade EM 11 - Case # 04845104

Post by Andanet »

Hi all,
i want to submit you an issue during upgrade from 9.5U4 to 11 P20210507. - Case # 04845104
Scenario:
Veeam B&R server with EM on same server windows 2019 version 1809.
SQL express (Microsoft SQL Server 2016 (SP1) (KB3182545) - 13.0.4001.0 (X64)) installed during first VEEAM installation.
Our customer, at the moment, don't want to provide an Enterprise edition of SQL Server.

During upgrade from 9.5U4 to 11 I receive an issue upgrading EM due to reaching the max quota of 10GB for SQL Express version of VeeamBackupReporting DB. I start from 2.6GB size and during upgrade I receive an error. Checking in SQL errorlog I found a lot of errors:
Error: 1827, Severity: 16, State: 1.
CREATE DATABASE or ALTER DATABASE failed because the resulting cumulative database size would exceed your licensed limit of 10240 MB per database.
Error: 1827, Severity: 16, State: 1.
CREATE DATABASE or ALTER DATABASE failed because the resulting cumulative database size would exceed your licensed limit of 10240 MB per database.
Error: 1101, Severity: 17, State: 12.
Could not allocate a new page for database 'VeeamBackupReporting' because of insufficient disk space in filegroup 'PRIMARY'. Create the necessary space by dropping objects in the filegroup, adding additional files to the filegroup, or setting autogrowth on for existing files in the filegroup.
mdf and ldf file reached 10GB.
I tried to shink db file without success.

No problem with B&R upgrade.
At the end I solve installing a new database on same instance and I have notice new DB has 1.6GB size.

I know SQL Express limitation, I ask to our customer to approach an EE, and we haven't proble if we don't use oldest data.
This behavior is very strange for me and I wnt to ask you if have same experience during upgrade and if you've solved differently
Thanks for your attention.

Hello,
yes, the growth of the enterprise manager database is a known thing we improved since 10a and continue to improve. Separating hosts for VBEM and VBR can be a workaround for SQL Express customers.

There is also SQL Standard edition which is much cheaper than enterprise edition: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/sq ... rver-ver15

Best regards,
Hannes

Thanks Hannes.
Ok for standard edition and ok for improving of db. I think during upgrade something goes wrong... in loop maybe.
My question and post was only to share with all my experience and check if somene had same issue.
I don't think is impossible to uprgade from 9.5U4 to 11 with sql express edition.

yep, it's "by design" and we are working on improving that design. Others also ran into that issue (even if they did not answer yet. I know customers).
