AWS Glacier

Post by Alvaro »

Hello

I am designing a solution with Veeam for AWS to backup EC2 and RDS loads.

As I see in the manual, veeam for aws only supports standard s3 to store backups.
I would like to be able to archive low-use, long-retention backups to Glacier or S3 IA. How would it be possible?

It occurs to me to store the backups in S3 and from here using the native capacity of AWS (lifecycle manager) to export data to GLACIER.
Could Veeam manage this process? Can veeam restore backups stored on glacier?

a greeting

Currently, Glacier is not supported but it is on our roadmap to add support for it as we are aware of the high amount of requests for it.

If you want to move them to Glacier now, you’ll need to use custom scripts (native aws cli) to handle the process but VBA will not be able to see those backups. It may be better to look at the VBR integration and use backup copy jobs to other storage for now.

Hi Niels
Does it support S3 Intelligent-Tiering for the repository?

+1, Really need the Glacier. It just doens't make sense to use Standard S3 storage for backups. $$ just don't make it practical. Whats the timeframe for this being available? Any indication would be fantastic.

A timeline is difficult to give, but we are working on things. Please watch VeeamON keynotes for more information :-)

So is there any indication on a fime frame for Glacier support? The Keynote back at VeeamOn just confirmed that it was a thing and was coming. But we are almost 6 months on and no word.

Scott,

VeeamON was in May, so a little less then 6 months ;-)

It still is coming, can't give any definitive ETA but we are finalizing.

Was more a comment on the start date of the thread :) So should have said 7 months. Just keen to see it happening.

Hi Scott,

The current plan is to have it available in Q3 this year.

@scott.anderson I’m happy to share that v4 is available via the marketplace and updater which includes Glacier support.

Is there a simple method to upgrade an existing Veeam AWS v3 appliance to v4? Or do we need to deploy a new v4 appliance?

The documentation discusses updates for a v4 appliance, but not how to upgrade TOO a v4 appliance from an existing older Veeam AWS appliance.

If its needs to be a new appliance, can we just point it at the existing v3 S3 repositories?

You can use the updater to update the appliance.
