Veeam Physical Server to HP EVA 6400 Best Methods?

Post by vmcreator »

Hi,

We have a HP 6400 EVA and we wish to backup to a physical server furnished with Veeam BR v5. The physical server has a dual HBA card and dual ethernet cards for iSCSI targets.

What do you recommend as the best option for Direct SAN mode to (source) EVA and iSCSI target to (destination) - a HP MSA target. Some people have used EMC Powerpath, some HP MPIO?

NOTE - The LUNs identified for backup are VMware VMFS3 LUNs.

I have heard of horror stories with certain HP MPIO, clashing with VMware LUNs etc, and would like to know what proven configurations people have had success with.

Regards

Hi, generally speaking, you cannot go wrong by NOT using any multipathing software at all. In those cases when it does work properly, many customers have reported it causing bad transfer rates. However, if you still plan on experimenting on various configs, please keep us posted. Thanks.

Hi Gostev,

We used Emulex software and [ Emulex OneCommand ] to administer and configure visibility to the HP EVA with selective presentation of just the required source LUNs to be backed up [ HP EVA does not have read only feature ].

The target side was teamed NICs with MS iSCSI software to point to our HP target MSA. All sorted today and Direct SAN backup mode is working okay along with CBT. Performance is very good.

Thanks for your guidance.
