Veeam Backup & Replication for Linux

Post by kalleanka »

From FAQ:
> Q: Is Veeam Backup & Replication available as a Linux-based virtual appliance?
> A: No.Veeam Backup & Replication must be installed on Microsoft Windows.

Will there ever be a Veeam Backup & Replication for Linux?

Thank you.

Do you mean the ability to install Veeam B&R on Linux? Since Linux VMs can be backed up just fine.

[MERGED] How about to build Veeam Backup Appliance (Linux Ba

If something like Veeam Backup Appliance (linux based) would exist, we will have no concern about ransomeware and backups.

Have Veeam ever think about such thing?

Think - yes, plan - no. Regarding your ransomware concern, you can use Linux-based backup repository, though, keep in mind that there are plenty of Linux ransomware as well, so the safest solution is still using air-gapped backups.

[MERGED] Is running B&R on Linux anywhere in the future?

Post by bunger »

Having setup Veeam against a Linux immutable repository recently, it seems it would be more efficient if B&R could run directly on a Linux box instead of having to push data across a network connection for backups.

Is such functionality anywhere on the roadmap?

Hi,

Not in a short-term for sure.

What do you mean by "it would be more efficient if B&R could run directly on a Linux box instead of having to push data across a network connection for backups."?

Unless you assign repo/gateway/proxy role to you backup server, most of VMs' backup data is transferred between hosts where the datamovers reside (source/target proxies, repos/gateways, WAN accelerators) while VBR basically orchestrates the process. Or do you want to have 100% all-in-one design?

Please elaborate,

Thanks

Ideally, 100% all-in-one design as most of our installs are all on the same box currently...

With Veeam, backups are direct to target (proxy>repository or agent>repository). No backup data flows through the backup server, so it makes no difference where it is installed.

This seems like a very old thread on this topic anyway, there is a newer one with more comments, so I'm locking this one down to prevent duplicate discussions.
