What really works to speed up Exchange 365 backup?

Post by flavio.santos »

Good morning guys,

I know that we have the auxiliary applications that helps with SharePoint, OneDrive and Teams, but and for Exchange, what can we do to speed up this backup? mainly the first full backup.

It's always a bad first impression, as for some customers it takes so long to finish it. Like for instance, a customer with 1000 licenses (and 32 aux applications), took:
  • 14 days to finish the Exchange backup (15TB)
  • 6 hours to finish OneDrive backup (5.4TB)
I read something about the throttling, but does this really helps with Exchange?

Here is one link that shows how to do it. Is there any Veeam link with this explanation? https://help.keepit.com/support/solutio ... an-be-done

Is there any other solution to speed up Exchange backup?

Thanks!

Hi Flavio,

Auxiliary accounts can't (and don't) help with mail backups, because Exchange requests are throttled differently. There's a KB explaining how you can temporarily release EWS throttling to facilitate first full backups: https://www.veeam.com/kb4198.

Additionally, in the VBO itself, there's a mechanism that allows to 'cool down' mailboxes that are being throttled during the backup. If one mailbox in the job exceeds the number of requests, VBO will temporarily leave it aside, take another mailbox for processing, and then get back to the first one.

Thanks!

Hi Polina, Thanks for your answer.

I will try that for sure.

Do I need to restart my job to this new EWS throttling take effect (after the 15 minutes)?

Thanks!

The change should apply automatically, no need to restart your jobs.
