Database maintenance

Post by elwappo »

Hey guys is there anyway to do maintenance on the collector database? I've had it storing data for 6 months now and it's gotten really big. 97 Gb big. What are my options to shrink this?

Hello, you can try to execute the following command in SQL Server manager:
Right-click Monitor database > Tasks > Shrink > Database

Should I shut the monitor down before I do this or is it ok to run while it's still collecting data? Thanks!

Ok we just figured out some specifics here. It wasn't our database that was 97 Gb it was the transaction log. We set up jobs to commit the transaction log based on a percentage of the size of the actual database. That fixed the problem. A suggestion here would be for the software to set up a similar condition on the database creation, or include in the documentation, for the user to set similar conditions. The transaction log, for us, was growing pretty fast. Just FYI.
