Feature Request: Restore DFS Namespace
Had an incident lately where one of our techs accidentally deleted a DFS Namespace rather than a folder under it. Sod's law dictated this was our biggest namespace with circa 1,000 subfolders which all were deleted in an instant. Being confident Veeam would come to the rescue I was disappointed to find Namespaces couldn't be restored which was also confirmed when I raised a case.
Though it gave us a good opportunity to learn how to recreate these with powershell, any chance this could be added as a feature?

Re: Feature Request: Restore DFS Namespace
Andrew,
I am not 100 percent certain but I restoring a DFS Namespace should be possible with Veeam in your scenario. If you have a backup of your AD, you should be able to open the Veeam Explorer. Then go to System\Dfs-configuration”. In here you will see your DFS name space details. Restore the lost information from a known good point and your links should be repaired.
The reason I am not 100 percent certain is because I have not done this in a while and I should check on the latest DFS versions to see if this still works and recovers everything which is needed

Thats where I was hoping to find it to restore but the System folder isn't shown, at least not in v9.5.

Did you clicked on the advanced features button on the ribbon toolbar? If you click on that, it should become visible.

Re: Feature Request: Restore DFS Namespace
Advanced features displays new folders Integrated DNS & Configuration Partition which has some system elements but not DFS Namespaces.

OK. I will talk to our developers. Can't make any promises though but consider this a feature request.
When you have restored, how did you do it now?

Re: Feature Request: Restore DFS Namespace
If you're asking how we overcome this issue, we recreated the Namespace manually and used a large powershell script to recreate all the folders under the Namespace and their relevant targets by analysing existing shares on the servers to see what had been done previously.

Re: Feature Request: Restore DFS Namespace
Only to add here that some DFS roots are not stored in AD, depends on the configuration, at least in some version of windows was possible to create it stand-alone and outside AD.
If in AD, the conf. objects should indeed be visible.
bye

Re: Feature Request: Restore DFS Namespace
Thanks for the additional info
I will need to verify what exactly is in AD and what is not. You are right that it has changed a lot, and with 2016, many more changes have come to DFS.

Wasn't it as option to power on DC from backup, export DFS config to a file using dfsutil and then reimport it to production?

Re: Feature Request: Restore DFS Namespace
We had the same thing happen about a week ago. So to fix the issue we had to restore the entire DFS VM. Once it was done it sync'd back up with AD, but that's a much longer fix than it should be.
So I'd like to put my chip in for this feature request as well.

+1 On this feature request.
Just tried to do this restore at a Veeam customer but found out it wasn't included in the Veeam Explorer for AD

Re: Feature Request: Restore DFS Namespace
a year ago but,has this feature been implemented in the meantime? Had to restore a DFS namespace yesterday but couldn't find an option to do so (9.5.U4). Lucky for us we still had another backuptool running (that we are phasing out in favour of Veeam B&R) which supported the restore. So I wonder if this works now or will be in the near future,
thanks
thanks

Re: Feature Request: Restore DFS Namespace
Hello, this feature is not planned for the near future due to a fairly low number of requests comparing to many other pending features, and a simple workaround available (see above). We're keeping it in mind for when the required dev team will be done with higher priority tasks though. Thanks!

Hello,
then let's increase the number of requests +1.
One of our customers is very sad now, his Veeam backup was his best hope to restore the DFS namespaces.
Best regards,
Ollie

Requests +1.
It is very easy to delete all links with a single click... But there is no restore option.

Re: Feature Request: Restore DFS Namespace
Hello,
I find it unfortunate that this function does not exist and that you still do not offer a solution (beginning of the 2017 post).
You don't have a lot of demand because most people don't think about it.
On the other hand when the problem arrives it is too late you do not propose a solution.
For me I had to find a manual solution which I found.
On the other hand, I was disappointed that Veeam did not answer my problem.
Do not forget who the customer is and especially that if he is disappointed with your product, he risks turning to the competition.

Re: Feature Request: Restore DFS Namespace
I am submitting my +1, and agree with SIESA. I had, until now, kind of assumed DFS would be able to be restored by Veeam. I should have really verified that. Most folks aren't going to think about this until the unfortunate time comes that they need it. Veeam restoring DFS would be great. Please consider it!

Another +1 for this request.
Any update on if this moved up the priority list at all since 2017?
