VeeamApp spamming in bash_history

Post by denser »

Hello,

On 11 version noticed on my linux server many lines in bash_history like:
/tmp/VeeamApp544fc38f-a92f-486a-88ac-e3911ae8924f ; echo 8705b097-84fc-4f91-a8af-1ebde109e81b
According to HISTCONTROL=ignoreboth in common case you have to just add space before command to DO NOT save it in history.

May be engineers add this option?(if it was added for some reason. in previous version i don't see any records in history)

Hello,
I just checked on my Veeam agent for Linux machine (and also a Linux repository just in case it was posted in the wrong forum) and I cannot see that kind of log entries in the .bash_history. Yes, there are different entries, but I would not call that "spamming".

Can you maybe give us more details what is configured to get that kind of messages? Do you see them at every backup run? How many of them (trying to define "spamming")?

Thanks,
Hannes

Hello, saying "spam" i mean it overwrights my history.
I don't configure something special for that, just noticed after upgrade to 11 version such behaviour.

May be it looks like spam coz i have 1hour plan for some servers and it somehow called via indexing?

In some cases i get 70% of history with such messages.

I suspect to use other than ROOT user to flush this to another history, but habits to as it was :)

Curious detail: on CentOS history is normal but on Ubuntu 20.04(Debian 9 as well) - it spoiled.

Hello,
okay, I understand now what you mean with spamming. Agree, that exists, especially if you run a job every hour.

I just tested with V10 and it's the same there. So from which version did you upgrade?

So you have the following setup:
1. central VBR server
2. agents "managed by backup server"
3. job running every hour including indexing

with that configuration, I see logs in bash_history, but not the ones from your post.

Best regards,
Hannes

but not the ones from your post.
I make an example, because every time string is similar but not the same. I have now bash_history full of kinda strings ~1000 lines. It overwrites all my stuff :)
On some servers I don't connect for ages because it works fine.

This is part of

Code: Select all

cat ~/.bash_history

Code: Select all

So from which version did you upgrade?
I can't remember exactly unfortunately...

Hi,

Which agent version do you use? 5.0.0 or 5.0.1?

Thanks!

Hello, not sure that virtual machine in Hyper-V have Agent.
It seems VBR connects via SSH and do stuff.

So, just to sum up:

You had upgraded from 10.0.1.4854 to 11.0.1.1261 and started seeing agent-related messages clogging up your bash history on your Linux machines where VAL is deployed.

Is everything correct?

If so, then kindly provide logs from the VBR server that is managing the mentioned agents.

Thanks!

Not exactly correct. After upgrade i get unresolvable error in one Hyper-V server. Cant fix it and had to reinstall VBR.

Error was about "Need upgrade host before backup." Like that. All part was up to date and none of solutions from community helps.

I need help to find that logs. Provide me path or similar, please.

Sure.

To collect logs from VBR please follow these instructions:

link.

You need to "collect all logs for selected components" (please select all of them). Date range should be the day when the the bash history entries appeared.

It is desirable that you open a support case and upload your logs there, and share your case ID with me aftrwards so that I could track the case from my side.

Thanks!
