Quick Migration with shared disks

Post by cavabanga »

Hello all.
I need to migrate one VM from esxi host to another, but i cant find an article about my situation.
So, i have 3 esxi hosts with essential kit(no Vmotion), they all connected via FC to a Lenovo V3000 storage. On that storage there are 3 LUNs, these LUNs are shared across all 3 hosts. Basically all VMs are stored on LENOVO and not on hosts.
The quetstion is : will quick migration create new VM on targeted host(copy configuration etc) and it will use the old vmdk`s(witch is already existing on a shared disks)? Or it will copy entire VM+disk to another host?

Hello,
and welcome to the forums.

Quick migration copies everything. Power Off on one host and Power ON on the other host is the solution.

Best regards,

What do you mean? Is this what is being executed by Veeam during quick migration, is it?

Hi,
as Hannes wrote, QuickMigration will copy the whole VM to the target and once done will perform a switchover.
To your question, there are two modes for the Switchover "SmartSwitch" and "ColdMigration". So yes, executed by Veeam.
Please find the details in the link Hannes posted.
Thanks
