VBO Backup with VBR to rotated Medium

Post by AeroEnterprise »

Hi,
we are a small company and have VBO and VBR running on the same Windows physical server.
To fullfill the 3-2-1 rule we want to save also the VBO Repository to the rotated medium which is stored offsite.

I have read this: https://bp.veeam.com/vbo/guide/design/3-2-1.html and lots of other related posts.
But i could not find any solution for my setup yet.

How could i do that, with VBR?
Since i migrated from an old server to the actual one, i know that for VBO i basically only need to copy the VeeamRepository Folder and redo the configs...

I tried so far,
* Backup Job from FileShare - but it doesn't allow the rotated repository as target.
* File Copy - but i get an "Error in Application" (translated, from original message) for each of the adb files.

Any help how this can be solved is appreciated!

Hi Martin

You can start a File to Tape Job. But I would stop the vbo365 services first.

Got me thinking here, possibly thats the problem why the "file copy job" is returning the "Error in Application".

Oh, sorry. I have misread the question.
Then File to tape job will not be correct, of course.

You need to create a Veeam Agent Job (volume level) directly to the usb disk repo. This way, your backups will use vss to make the db consistent.
That will work, if you have used a dedicated volume for the vbo data.
If you have stored the vbo data on the same repo as the vbr data, then volume level backup jobs are not a good idea.

With a single volume for vbr and vbo data, you can try File Level Backup Jobs with the Veeam Agent. But the performance will not be that good. I would stop the vbo service before starting the job. Can be done per script.

Ok, thank you i think i got it it.

Installed on the same Server now additionally (too allready installed VBO and VBR) the Veeam Agent for Windows. Now i find this possibilities.

I will try to go for volume level, but need to seperate VBR and VBO Repository to different Volumes first...

Your welcome.

That would be the best approach to solve the 3-2-1 in your case. Let us know, how it worked out for you, after you have configured it.

Hi,

thank you for your help.

It is working as you said:
* Using Veeam Agent instead of VBR
* Volume Level Backup (moved VBO Repository to its own volume)
* Backup to USB Disk directly and not to VBR Repository (the Repository with Rotated Media is not available in Veeam Agent anyway)

I have still to check how this configuration works with the rotation of the USB Disk...

I'm happy that it works sofar, but still confused why the VBO guide on this topic is writen the way that it should work with VBR, which is not longer involved in my solution.
