Veeam Agent on SQL Cluster

Post by Dan2000 »

We use B&R 11 and have always backed up our virtual SQL Cluster (2 nodes) using Agent backups and driven from the agent.

I'd like to use the "Immediate" backup copy job for this SQL cluster backups and so I need to get the Veeam B&R Server to manage the backups. When I create a new agent based job on the server I notice a "Failover Cluster" option and have done the reading up as per this article https://www.veeam.com/kb2463

Before I go ahead and create a new server managed cluster failover agent backup job - does anyone know if it works ok with our SQL server shared disks that are RDM/RAW disks on our SAN? They were setup this way many years ago due to some issue with Windows Server/SQL 2012, I can't remember what the issue was but that's why we're using agent based backups as ESXi doesn't support snapshotting the RDM/RAW disks. Yes we're migrating to a newer version of Server and SQL but for now I want so sort this issue.

Hello and Welcome to Veeam R&D Forums,

Basically, you should have a look at this page to get more information about cluster processing limitations. I'm afraid that your setup is not supported by Veeam agent in the managed mode:
Backup of CSV (Cluster Shared Volumes) is not supported. Cluster disks used as CSV are automatically excluded from backup.
You may continue using backup copy in periodic mode as it works with backups created in both standalone and managed modes.

Thanks!

Thanks PetrM, we'll just use managed mode but without the cluster feature then. Since I use agent/standalone at the moment to do my backups can these be converted to managed backups any way? I have limited backup space on my backup repository and don't think I have enough space for new, managed backups of the same servers onto our backup storage.

No, there is no option to convert standalone backups to managed ones. You should find some space in order to restart the chain.

Thanks!

Hello,
does anyone know if it works ok with our SQL server shared disks that are RDM/RAW disks on our SAN?
just to clarify the limitation my colleague mentioned: in general it works fine. most customers (including you) use shared disks. shared disks work fine as long as you don't have any of the other limitations (which I cannot see in your post). only CSVs are not supported, but that should be irrelevant for you.

Regards,
Hannes
