Are Dell ML3 LTO9 libraries supported?

Post by cerberus »

Hi all,

We are looking to upgrade our existing Dell ML6000 (LTO7) to Dell ML3 LTO9 FC to increase speed and capacity.

Our existing ML6000 is a rebadged ADIC Scalar i500 with IBM ULTRIUM drives, this works fine.

Is anyone using Veeam with Dell ML3 tape library, will it work?

I found this thread that confirms Dell ML3 with LTO7 will work (tape-f29/dell-emc-ml3-tape-compatibility-t75720.html).

Will LTO9 drives work with Veeam or if there are any potential concerns to be aware of?

Hi Mirza

LTO9 is officially supported with Veeam V11a and Patch P20211211.

Release Notes for Veeam Backup & Replication 11a Cumulative Patches
LTO-9 support. Tape jobs will now identify and display the media calibration process in the Action log and will no longer time out should this process takes longer than 15 minutes.
With Veeam V11, a hotfix is required.

Perfect, thanks Mildur for pointing that out.

We are on VBR11 so i'll make plans to upgrade to v11a as part of the h/w refresh.

Actually, if the tapes are pre-calibrated, you may use v11. I know some vendors already have tape calibration (initialization) in the library UI, like this.

I'd recommend to install the latest Veeam B&R 11a P20211211 update anyway. Thanks!
