Sizing repository server advice.

Post by cannistracir »

Hello,

I am writing to ask you a question:

I have a veeam repository server with 3 Extend:
Lz1: 100TB
Lz2: 100TB
Lz3: 100TB

The server configuration is as follows:
2 socket
32 cores
64 logical processors.

The question is how many concurrent tasks are possible for the three repositories?

3x11 or 3x21

Should we take the physical cores or the logical processor.

Thanks for your help.

You need to calculate with physical cores. It really depends as well on a lot of settings.

When I understood correctly, you have one Repository Server and you use 3 extents on it.
You can start with 3x 11 Repository task slots and monitor CPU consumption. If there are a lot of free CPU resources, you could consider going a bit higher.

Andreas is right here.
The task assignment also has to be put in relation with the task settings on the proxy servers.
So it is really about understanding and designing the full picture instead of looking into the repo tasks only. Based on my experience I think you will be able to assign more than the 33 tasks if this server only owns the repository role.

Feel free to add your results and more details to the thread as it may be of interest for others in the forum as well.

Thanks

On a repository
Number of tasks depend not only on cpu power => what about storage performance !!! ?

You are right and that’s what we mean when saying:

I would say backup and more important recovery speed depends on the whole chain from source OS till the target media you use.
With that it is always important to create a full design instead of looking into a single value only.

But in this thread the question was about the task assignment. As I wrote if there are any further questions details can be added anytime.

Hello, after more testing, I assigned more than 32 tasks to improve backup speed, currently I increased to about 50 tasks for extensions, and the backup window is shorter. Indeed it is not very clear. Thank you for your answers.

Hi,
thanks for the feedback after your tests.
Good to hear that you were able to shorten the backup window and optimize your environment.
Always good for others to get those infos in the thread.
Thanks
