Restore Files as local Admin (not Backup Admin)

Post by david.brunner »

Dear forum,
even though there is a lot of information on the web, I did not find a suitable solution yet.

Situation:
Veeam B&R Enterprise, vsphere (ESX 7) Hypervisor environment, Backup of VMs via scheduled VMWare Backup Jobs

Problem:
ERP Admin (only for the ERP Server, not for Hypervisors or Veeam Backup server!) did a maintainance at midnight and had to restore Files.
Since he does not have permissions on B&R Console, he was not able to. Simple File Copy of the manual backup was not sufficient (due to ACL)

Goal:
I want to give him the possibility to restore Files (especially File for Disk D: (SCSI 0:1)) on his own.

solutions I found till now:
- give him access to Veeam B&R console (and teach him).
- install Agent Backup on VM and create secondary job
- B&R Enterprise plus license for Web-based file restore method

any other possibilities?
I would also be glad if it would be possibly via powershell Script or via Agent Software, accessing the Backup Job

thanks and best regards!

Hi David,

We expect customers to be using the first or the last option from the list in such scenarios. You may also rely on PowerShell to achieve the same, but this option does not remove the requirement to have an account with proper permissions.

Yes, this functionally is basically designed for your use case > Self-Service File Restore Portal to Restore Machine Guest Files
However, all self-service features have always been limited to Enterprise Plus per the editions parafigm.

I recommend you request a Socket to VUL license migration quote, as it might be the cheaper way to get to ENT+ functionality level (plus Production support program on top).

Thanks for your answers. This is along the line what I thought.

I really would first investigate an approach with powershell.
Maybe "Get-VBRRestorePoint & Start-VBRRestoreVM will help
I can store the .ps1 as self-executing containing the credentials

since it is for a specific case and not very often, I cannot ask the management for a higher license.

We have a subforum for all PS-related questions, so if you need an assistance with the scripting, let us know there. Thanks!
