Dynamic Bandwidth settings and File Level Backup Resume

Post by FSchellhase »

Hello,

we are currently in the final testing of the Veeam Agent for Windows prior the initial rollout. During our testing we spotted some points that are quit problematic four us and I want to ask if anyone has a solution for these points. We are managing the clients with Veeam Backup and Replication, Agents configured in ServerMode, Managed by Agent, and are using a Cloud Connect backup target.

The first one is the possibility to limit the network bandwidth for backup processes. Since a lot of our users are still working in their home offices most of the time because of Corona, we have the problem that an unlimited Veeam Backup Agent consumes all available bandwidth of the internet connection. We've already seen that it’s possible to configure a bandwidth limit at protection group level, but this is not a good solution for us. The problem in configuring the bandwidth on protection group level is, that the users are not able the change this value. And since there are many different types of internet connections we can't define one value that fits all.

The second problem concerns the duration of the initial backup if the user is working in his home office. The initial backup could easily transmit 60, 70 or more GB, which is quite a lot if you use an internet connection with about 5 or 10 Mbit/s upload. In most cases, the backup wouldn't finish during one workday. This wouldn't be a problem, if the Agent would continue the backup the next time the client is powered on. Unfortunately, the Agent doesn't continue the backup and starts a new one. The only solution here would be to tell every user to keep the client powered on since the backup is completed.

Did anyone had similar problems and found a solution? Or is it already planned to address the problems in a future release of the Veeam Agent?

Best regards,
Florian

Hello,
and welcome to the forums.

The only workaround I see is to somehow find a way to finish the initial transfer by bringing the laptop to a place where there is enough bandwidth. As you said, not a solution for you. Yes, also others had similar issues and there is no real solution except the one I mentioned in the beginning.

It sounds like you ask for a dynamic bandwidth detection. That makes sense, but is not available today. We plan improvements on incremental file-based backups. But for the foreseeable future the functionality around resuming backups will stay the same as today.

Best regards,
Hannes
