vmware 6 free hypervisor

Post by itbio »

Hi there,

i am newbie in veeam and i have some questions about it. In our environment we have some esxi hosts 6 with free edition. We have also purchased the veeam enterprise plus as our backup solution. My question is how we should configure the inventory? As example should we add the esxi as standalone? What is the benefit of doing so? Or we just need to add the vm's as manually added? I should also have to mention that this is for a short period of time because we intent to purchase licenses for vmware and install vcsa.

Thank you in advance!

Hi Vaggelis,

VMware Image based backups need a VMware license to enable the APIs used for backup. This would be the prefered backup method, but would work only later when you add the VMware licenses. This is not a limitation of Veeam, it is one enforced by VMware.

As alternative you can use Veeam Agent based backups.
Add the VMs individually to a protection group and create Agent Backup Jobs for Windows and Linux.
You can find all details here in the guide: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ction.html
