Object immutability and seeding Backups to AWS Snowball Edge Storage

Post by massimiliano.rizzi »

Hello Community,

we are planning on using Veeam with Amazon S3 Storage services to store offsite backups and make them immutable for a given number of days.

It would be great if we could leverage AWS Snowball Edge as an initial object storage repository in order to seed the initial backups to Amazon S3 (a minimum of 8 TBs).

According to the section of the Help Center available at https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=110, it is my understanding that in a scenario where the AWS Snowball Edge is used with Veeam Backup & Replication Versioning and Object Lock must not be enabled on the used S3 bucket.

Is my understanding correct ? Is it possible to enable Versioning and Object Lock later on when data is uploaded by Amazon to the storage account ?

Wish you a great week ahead.

Thanks!

Hi Massimiliano,

Snowball edge does not support object lock (immutability). You would need to seed the data as non immutable. Technically, you could see the data as non immutable and then open a support case with AWS to turn on object lock/versioning on the bucket once the data is transferred and then add it in veeam as an immutable bucket. However this is up to AWS to enable and may depend upon your support contract.

Immutability with seeding get tricky due to versioning.

Hi there Dustin,

first of all thank you for taking the time to provide me with the information. It is very much appreciated.

I know that the customer involved has an open contract with AWS across multiple countries, so it might be worth for us to ask AWS whether they are willing to turn on object lock/versioning on the bucket once the data is transferred.

In case AWS is willing to enable object lock/versioning on the bucket after returning the AWS Snowball Edge device back to them, is this fully supported on the Veeam side ?

Thanks!

It will be supported, as long as the process is done correctly - there are some interesting moments that should be kept in mind while migrating data (like assigning correct object version).

I recommend you opening a ticket with our support team. They are already aware of proper seeding procedure and even have a guide for that.

If you open a ticket and share its number here, we can ensure that your support engineer has all necessary materials at hands.

Thanks!

Hi there Vladimir,

thank you for your reply. It is very much appreciated.

I confirm that I am going to open a ticket with the support team in order to request the guide for the proper seeding procedure as the customer requested us to complete some paperwork regarding the seeding procedure and we have a call scheduled next week to start planning it.

I will share the ticket number here later today.

Thanks!

Great, I've passed this information internally, so the seeding guide creator should reach your support engineer soon (probably, tomorrow). Thanks!

Same question here, we are about to send data AWS capacity immutable tier and snowball edge would be much more economic even if we have networking capacity.

Is there any change in the procedure with B&R v12?
And can this post-seeding fix be done by Rackspace as intermediate AWS support?

It's too early to talk about how things will work in v12, but if you are planning to seed the immutable data through Snowball Edge soon, you will need to open a ticket with our support team and let them guide you. Thanks!
