Restore SQL Database between different builds

Hi

Just wondering if we can restore a DB to a lower version using VBR, like (SQL 2019) to (SQL 2012) or vice versa?

or between SQL build/CU levels? like (SQL 2016 CU16) to (SQL 2017 CU17) or vice versa?

and welcome to the forums.

Restore to older versions might fail because newer versions of SQL might use features that are not available in older versions. So that's something you need to test for your use-case.

Restoring to newer versions works. I know customers who did migrations between SQL versions with Veeam.

Thank you for the insight. my question is related to a backup taken using VBR, say a SharePoint DB running on SQL 2019 and restoring it to a different server with SQL 2012? or a backup of 2016CU16 to CU17 or vice versa. not the VBR database migration. hope it is clear

please see my answer above. I only talk about SQL restore. Not the VBR database.

for same version with only different CUs, I expect restores to older patch-levels to work as long as no new features were introduced with CUs (I don't know whether Microsoft does that)

Recover and Restore SQL Database cannot be done by any manual method or trick. You must be use an automated tool such as Recovery-Tools for SQL Server.
