Number of VMs per concurrent task – resource schedulling

Post by Luiz E. Serrano »

Hi! Our customer has 2.000 VMs and asked us to perform backup tasks in parallel (concurrent task) for 50VM (vsphere) each time.

On average, each VM has 04 vdisk and the backup proxies will be configured to a maximum of 50 concurrent tasks.

It´s not clear in the documentation if the proxy schedule is based on vDisk or VM: “ when you start a data protection or disaster recovery job, Veeam Backup & Replication analyzes the list of VMs added to the job, and creates a separate task for every disk of every VM to be processed”.

https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=110

Does this mean that a backup task will be performed for any 50 vdisks of any VM in parallel?

Or the proxy will distribute one task to one VM vDisk, resulting in the backup of 50 VMs in parallel ?

Hello Luiz,

In the case with VM backup, the concurrent tasks limit controls how many VM disks will be processed simultaneously by backup proxy, not VMs. Please, keep in mind the system requirements, as for simultaneous processing of 50 VM disks by a single backup proxy the recommended amount of RAM is 200GB. Yoy may also split the VMs between different proxies of the appropriate type.

Thanks

Correct 50 concurrent vdisks will be processed by the proxies. I wouldn't say "of any VM" though as it doesn't randomly select vdisks from VM's in the job rather it add vdisks from a given VM when that VM becomes eligible for processing (when proxy "slots" become available)...
