how do i delete backup data in Scale-out repository

Post by noah »

Hello.

I want to delete the data in the old Scale-Out repository because I'm getting a backup with a new SOBR.
I have created SOBR by adding a new bucket and new DAS backup repository.
Is there any way to delete the data?

[Old SOBR Configuration]
<Performance Tier>
- DAS repository 1
- DAS repository 2

<Placement Policy>
- Data locality

<Capacity Tier>
- AWS S3(used 80TB)

I'm not going to use the old SOBR anymore.

<Current Data Deletion way>
1. Backup Job delete
2. Backups -> Object Storage(Orphaned) delete from disk
3. Backups -> disk(Orphaned) delete from disk

[deletion way]
1. SOBR edit -> Capacity tier untick -> finish
2. Backups -> disk(Orphaned) delete from disk
3. AWS S3 bucket delete

Let me know if you have any good ideas.
Thank you.

Hi Noah

I hope I get it right. You want to remove the old SOBR and the old backups from Veeam's configuration database?
You don't need them anymore?

1) Delete the backup Jobs
2) Remove orphaned backups (or only remove the backups from the configuration database)
3) Remove the SOBR under Scale-out Repositories
4) Remove AWS S3 under Backup Repositories
5) Remove the DAS repository 1 and DAS repository 2 under Backup Repositories
6) Delete the bucket on amazon (If you have used object storage, you must wait until the immutability period is over)

Hi Mildur :)
i didn't need anymore.
Object storage backup data deletion is taking too long.
It takes up to an hour to clear backup data for one Backup job(Restore point 30).
If I delete the data using the 6 steps you told me, will it be erased cleanly?

In VEEAM, immutability is not set, is it a function in aws?

Immutability for Capacity Tier is a feature in veeam which leverages S3 ObjectLock from Amazon. But if you don't have configured it on the bucket and in Veeam, then it wasn't used for offloading the backups :) You can check it in the properties of the added AWS S3 Object Storage in Veeam.

A bucket must be empty, before you can delete it. You could try to empty the bucket from outside of veeam, if veeam takes to long. But I think, all methods will take some time to remove 80TB of small objects. Must be millions of objects to remove.

After the bucket is gone, you only have to remove the backups from the configuration database in veeam.
