Multiple backup schedule vs one backup schedule

Post by cbraafhart »

Dear Forum,

In my quest to find knowledge, I was wondering regarding my subject. This could be an easy answer I think but I would like some clarifications if it grants any benefits to whatsoever.

I have a dedicated backup server getting information from my ESXI hosts.
My backups are currently scheduled one after the other. Simply put, First backup starts at 1800, second one starts after the first one is finished, third one starts after the second one is finished and so on.

My question(s) is as followed:
Does this grant any benefit compared to having 1 backup schedule with all servers in that single schedule?

What's the drawback of using either one of the methods?

I am under the impressions, if and when you have a bulk backup schedule it would take longer to read and transfer all data to the backup media.

Hosts have 4x 1Gbe network card
SAN enclosure uses 10GB connections
Backup Media is currently using 1x 1GBe connection( will also use 10GB in the future)

Job chaining (running jobs one after another with the dependent schedule policies) is not recommended due to these considerations. So having all VMs processed and balanced inside a single job works better in your case. Thanks!
