backup jobs definitions

Post by erbinb »

IN this scenario we have 1290 office 365 users, each have mailbox, archive mailbox, onedrive account, teams, and finally all are using 9 Sharepoint Sites.
What is the best options for create the jobs? maybe we can create jobs by users groups ? how many repositories are recommended?
Thanks for your reply.

Hi Erbinb

Our recommendation is to use a backup repository for each type of source data that you want to backup. That's the only way, if you require different retention settings for each datatype.
To use different repositories, you must use another backup job for each repository.
You can read about it in our best practice guide for VB365: https://bp.veeam.com/vbo/guide/buildcon ... -repo.html

I would create at least two repositories:
- Exchange --> Target for Mailboxes and Archive Mailboxes
- SPO --> Target for Teams, Sharepoint and OneDrive
- optional OneDrive --> only if you need another retention for this data

And I would create 2-3 Backup Jobs to keep everything simple to manage.
- 1 single Job for Exchange Mailbox and Archive for all User
- 1 single Job for SPO and Teams (optional OneDrive)
- optional 1 single Job for OneDrive Data

How many teams exists in your tenant?

Another suggestion would be to set up Dynamic jobs for the user's mailboxes/archives - break them out by either quantity or by name like a-f, g-k, etc. This will help with ingesting and first backups to not take as long.

Hello, thanks for your reply. There are 100-150 MIcrosoft Teams.

As licensing is based on per-user, we opted to run multiple VM's with each respective data protection type to allow for better management of data.

e.g.
Server 1, SharePoint + Teams
Server 2, Email (Primary)
Server 3, Email (Archive)
Server 4, OneDrive

Thanks.

My calculation are based on the assumption, that you always include entire organization and not choose specific source objects based on a group or automated by a script.
- 150 Teams counts as 450 objects (Group Mailbox, Teams SPO Site and Teams)
- 9 SPO Sites (+150 Teams Sites will be included too) counts as 159 objects
- 1290 Mailboxes (+ 150 Group Mailboxes will be included too) counts as 2730 objects (Mailbox + Archive Mailbox)

That's 3339 Objects. Our recommendation is max 20000 objects per proxy (8 Core, 32GB RAM).

thanks TMCkinnon for your reply, when you said one server by workload , you are recommending one proxy server by SPO+teams, another proxy for EMail primary and so on.

e.g.
Server 1, SharePoint + Teams
Server 2, Email (Primary)
Server 3, Email (Archive)
Server 4, OneDrive

Depending on the data size, I would start with one server and 8 Cores and 32GB Memory.
Will you be using virtual or physical machines for the VB365 server?
