Disaster Recovery Question with tapes

Post by col0889 »

I am currently in the process of testing our tapes on a different backup server. After inventorying and cataloging the tapes I don't see an option to restore from tape. When I go to the home tab I don't see any nodes. What am I missing?

This may be a dumb question but you added the tape server to the Veeam server correct? Also, I am not sure you can use the same tape server on two different VBR servers as typically Veeam needs exclusive access. Can you not test on your main backup server where the tapes are used?

Sorry I should have clarified a bit. We are wanting to verify our backups from tape work for DR purposes. We test them every six months off-site. Our main backup server isn't connected to the second backup server. They are in two different environments. I can restore files from the tape on the "DR backup server", but I am not seeing an option to be able to a VM from tape.

Ok - so offsite do you have a Veeam VBR and Tape server to use for the testing? If you are trying to just read the tapes with other software then it will not work or allow restore operations.

The off-site is an exact replication of our main location office. Has Veeam VBR and tape server for testing. The tapes were backed up with Veeam and we're trying to restore with Veeam.

Ok - are the versions of Veeam the same at both locations? This might be why you cannot see anything to restore. Would check this next.

Just checked to make sure. Both are version 11 and are licensed.

Version 11 ok - but the same patch level? If you check the Help About does it show the exact same versions? Also, do you have any screenshots of the issue?

Yup, they are the same patch level. From the screenshot below you can see there are no nodes after inventorying and cataloging the tape. Does it matter if we use files to tape or backups to tape when we're backing up our tapes?

If you use the file to tape you can check the Files tab to see if the restore points show here. Also, I would check the Tape Infrastructure tab to ensure everything shows properly as well.
