Restore Volume to different volume query

Post by FTL »

Hi

I have a volume level backup of a ISCSI LUN on a NAS box thats got the drive letter D in the Windows host server (7TB)

That volume still exisits but im replacing the NAS and want to restore the data to the new NAS so i can retire the old one, the old one will remain in use though while the data is being restored so will just manually copy over any changed files after that.

When i do a volume level restore and choose disk mapping i choose the new ISCSI LUN drive on the server, drive letter N (28TB), choose Apply DIsk Layout and then extend the volume size to use all space.

But it looks like it will restore it as D aswell, which will conflict with the exsiting D drive thats still present on the server.

Is this correct, and if so how do i restore the volume (drive letter D) to Drive letter N (the new NAS box)
Do i need to do Guest File Restore instead?

Thanks

Hi FTL

Why not using a filecopy Tool which lets you copy the entire content of D:\ to N:\.
Most of this Copy Tools let you do an initial sync and then sync the last state on the day you want to go productive with the new drive. It's also a better choice instead of "manually coping changed data".

I always used Fastcopy, but Robocopy should do the same.

Hi Mildur

There are 7m small files - figured explorer or file copy would take an eternity to process that much?

If you don't want to or can't use robocopy you can always use windows native disk mirror to copy the data to the new NAS.
1. Add the new LUN to the system
2. create the mirror (example, no warranty: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-set- ... windows-10)
3. remove the old NAS LUN once sync is done
4. remove the mirror
5. change the drive letter to N:\

With that you let Windows do the job.
If you want it outside windows then what @Mildur mentioned is an easy way to go. I used robocopy 100s of times to do exactly the same.

Used Fastcopy as you suggested - thats a great tool, never come accross it before!

Thankyou for your suggestion :)
