Windows File Level Restore for Dynamic Disks

Post by jcwilsonmd »

Have a Windows 2003 server where the data drive (D Drive) is Dyanmic Drive with 45 spanned disks (long story but the person before me just keep adding space as they needed it)

I went ot do a Restore (Guest Files Windows) I get the following errors:

e:\ mount failed
The volume does not contain a recognized file system
Please make sure all the required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted

Same error for f:, g:, h:, i: and j: These drives don;t exist but obviously B&R thinks that each spaneed drive is a sperate dfrive letter. As stated before it is one big D drive

Any way around this or am i up the creek to restore these files this way - any other suggestions on a recovery method to pull two files from this server?

You can try using the "Other OS" option as it has some limited support for dynamic disks, but 45 spanned disks is a little crazy, although I guess you know that.

The next best option is probably to try booting the system in a virtual lab and copying the files out that way, or performing an instant recovery but not connecting to the production network.

I have the same issue with only 2 spanned disks and "other OS" option does not work either.
Spanning at the Windows level is the only way to exceed the 2TB limitation of a vmdk, which means, as far as I understand, that Veeam do not support file level restore of drives larger than 2TB.
Is this correct, or is there any work around this?

Is this planned to be resolved in v6?

Robert, no news currently. You can use Instant Recovery instead or fire up the VM in a virtual lab to retrieve files, as Tom suggested above.

Was this fixed in v6.1?

I also have the same issue with only 2 spanned disks and "other OS" option does not work either on a Windows 2008 R2 server. I did not configure this VM but the D: drive has a 10GB vmdk and 100GB vmdk dynamic spanned Windows partition.

John, v6.1 did not provide any changes in this area, though we are currently working on improving FLR from dynamic disks in the upcoming v6.5.

Version 6.5 should fully support FLR from all types of dynamic disks, unless some terrible technical issue is found in the final steps of the testing that was previously overlooked.
