Integration with Dell EMC Powerstore array

Post by dpmarkham »

I am setting up VMWare VM replication for a customer that is using Dell EMC Powerstore as their primary VM datastore storage. They are using FC as their protocol for VMWare datastores. They are using virtualized Veeam Proxies at the source and destination site. Given that virtual proxies cannot use Direct Access via FC to read the data from storage snapshots on the array, I am wondering if there is any need or advantage to installing the "Dell EMC PowerStore plug-in for Veeam".

Hello,
short answer: not for backup :-)

Longer answer: if you do snapshots (no backups) on the PowerStore, you can access them, because they are mounted via the ESXi hosts

Hannes

Thanks. Only use Veeam for VM replication at this point so no storage snaps.

They can hit the array but you would have to use iscsi ( That's what I do for ours) or possibly use FC NPIV but I've not tested that.

Hello,
then the short answer applies.

No, never do FC NPIV... very ugly (I don't remember all details, but simply "no")

Best regards,
Hannes
