Data domain

Post by mporliod »

I had read some old posts where it is not recommended to use the data domain as the primary repository.
I wanted to know if the situation has remained unchanged and what are the reasons if it is still not recommended.

Hello,

It's for performance reason. If you don't have any other solution and need to be regular full, try to avoid synthetic full and do only active full :)
Datadomain is good for backup copy repository because of deduplication to store data for long time.

We have DD for years now together with Veeam. Yes you should not/cant use reverse incremental forever or synthetic full when having such a backup repository because a DD doesnt like it when the files changing after they stored. From a space consumption perspective its not a big deal performing active full when having a DD.... you need a little more time but thats it.

It sad that uploading images arent supporty by this forum. I would like to show you a graph where veeam thinks that it saves 85Tib within a retention policy of 21 days and some weekly with a attached GFS but in real the DD need less than 6TiB of space.

Hi Joerg

You can upload it to https://imgbb.com/ and then insert it here in your post.

Have you also numbers for the restore?
I don‘t have good experience with restoring entire environments or single items from dedup appliances.
Backup is one thing, but using the right storage for restore is much more important when it comes to short RTO requirements.

Thanks

Normaly, you should see something like this on your DD:

Image

Capacity = total storage on your datadomain available
UsedSpace is the total space that should be needed with no dedup no block cloning,...

It's "normal" tu see usedSpace > Capacity on dedup appliance

For sure we also have numbers for restore.... we only have entry level DD and this unit performs not so good like the DR42xx we use earlier when it comes for backup and restore.
We switched to Veeam recently when it comes to this customer. A single Job or better task see around 250MB/s and when multiple Tasks are running we get 670 Mb/s.
For the restore numbers i must take a look to my writings from the past.
