Veeam B&R 11, Server 2019 and KB5015811
Hi,
My 1st Issue post here and I hope it's in the correct section.
I am running a Veeam B&R 11 (11.0.1.1261_20220302) on Server 2019 Standard VM on a VMware Infrastructure v7.0.3f.
Veeam B&R is properly configured and never experienced any issues even after performing vCenter and ESXi Updates.
Most important, the setup is used a integration environment to test Microsoft Windows Updates before deployment to Production Severs.
I installed the latest WU 2022-07 Cumulative Update for Windows Server 2019 (1809) for x64-based Systems (KB5015811) and after the reboot VM Backups fail due to RPC and Veeam MP Errors from the Event Log Viewer.
I checked the Infrastructure Menu and there seems to be issues with Proxies and Backup Location, they are no longer available.
I performed rescans and everything goes back to normal in the menu but VM Backups still fail.
All Veeam Services are up and running, Firewall Rules are all correct and none are missing.
If I delete the Agent Backup Proxy, I am able to recreate it again. If I delete the VMware Backup Proxy, I cannot recreate it and get a Transport Error.
The only way to get Veeam B&R working again is to remove 2022-07 Cumulative Update for Windows Server 2019 (1809) for x64-based Systems (KB5015811).
Not having a 2nd test server at my disposal I cannot reproduce the error but I am sure the issues is caused by KB5015811.
I opened a case: Case #05535316 — Veeam B&R 11, Server 2019 and KB5015811
TY In advance for the feedback.
Best Regards,
Gregory

Are you facing the changed RPC behavior in Windows? Did you try the RegKey?

HI Joerg,
TY for the answer.
The server never had RPC Issues and it's running since over 2 years. What do you mean by "Try the RegKey"?
Basically after installing the Updated Veeam B&R loses the connection to Default Backup Repository (Event Error ID Veeam MP 21224) and VMware Backup Proxy (Event ID Veeam MP 21214).
Removing the Update, everything works again, so it must WU related.
BR,
Gregory

Hi Gregory,
I agree that it looks to be related to the recent update. I believe that you should continue to work with our support team on RCA to find out what exactly affects RPC, after that we'll be able to say if there are other workarounds besides uninstall of the mentioned update.
Thanks!

Are there any news about KB5015811? Has support identified any issues and a fix? Is this windows update considered safe for Veeam setup on Server 2019?

Hi Johannes,
I've asked our QA engineers to check this scenario in our environment. I'll update the topic as soon as I hear back from my colleagues.
Thanks!

Re: Veeam B&R 11, Server 2019 and KB5015811
Hello,
My colleagues from QA have done the test with the mentioned update in our lab and couldn't reproduce the same issue. Therefore, we cannot say that the update itself causes any problems. In Gregory's case, we can see failed attempts to connect to Veeam Installer Service, most likely the service was not running. Let's wait for the results of research from our support team.
Thanks!

Hi,
Just a small feedback ton inform you that the issue is solved.
I installed multiples times KB5015811 on the VM and I was only able to reproduce the error once.
As PetrM well stated it's Services related. Oddly all my Veeam Services never had startup problems but it seems that they do have some after installing KB5015811.
By setting all Veeam Services to Delayed solved the matter.
Once again TY to all for your help.
I wish you all a great weekend.
BR,
Gregory
