@gostev any further update on this. Are we still looking at V12 and if so what’s a ball park release date for that. I have a lot of clients I’m wanting to get working with this but not sure how long I can wait and don’t really want the go the AWS path then have to change and re upload all backups

Hi Rhys,

There are no significant updates. At this time, v12 (our immediate next major release in 2022) is the earliest release vehicle where we can potentially deliver this feature. Though there are still dependencies on Microsoft making this functionality generally available in time, and the following internal testing results.

Please note that this will likely be required to leverage immutability in any case. No cloud object storage vendor out there supports enabling object-level locking on an existing bucket, and from what we know Azure will have the same limitation.

With this recent preview release from Azure, can we hope that once this goes GA that VEEAM will add support for Azure immutable storage with blob level being possible?

Not with the current implementation. Just as I suspected earlier, this v1 implementation did not come without nasty surprises. There is a significant limitation in the blob storage API that will make using immutability very expensive (not to mention poor performance) due to requiring many times more API calls comparing to S3... so we will need to wait for some "v2" first. We've made Microsoft aware about this issue, they understand it and are planning to address it down the road. So we can only hope they can do this in time for V12.

From our side there are no difficulties, so we can deliver it in the immediate release vehicle after this limitation is addressed.

During Veeam presentation of "EMEA: BIGGEST cloud release: AWS, Azure and Google" on Nov 4th. the presenter mentioned that immutability on Azure is not implemented due to the fact that Azure implements immutability on bucket level instead of object level.

@Gostev, if this is correct, does that mean that Veeam is awaiting for Microsoft to implement this feature first and is there any kind of timeframe? I guess that this would put off implementing this feature for sometimes B&R v12 och when Microsoft finds it suitable on the priority list?

If there is no plans from Microsoft side to implement this, then we would have to look for alternatives (probably AWS) but that has a less technical and much larger administrative overhead for us to implement due to local public procurements law and internal policies.

Now that Immutable storage for Azure Blob Storage is publicly available, can we use it with the Veeam archive tier or will it require an update from Veeam first? I suspect it will require a code update, but figured I'd ask the group.

Great news from Anton in today's forums digest. It looks like we have a good chance to see immutability support with Azure blob im V12. Let's hope Microsoft is as fast as Veeam with implementing the changes and going out of preview state.

I'm aware Azure doesn't have the object storage with object lock like AWS and thus Veeam cannot perform native immutable backups to it yet but does anyone has news on if MS in planning on offering this any time soon?

Current target is still H2 of 2022 but we can't provide any exact date yet for it. Once we have a more precise date, we'll update the topic with details.

In terms of V12 timeline:

The company is in a "steady state period," senior global technologist Anthony Spiteri told iTWire, but Veeam Backup and Replication v12 is due for release at the end of the year (with general availability in January 2023), and work is already underway on v13.
