restore of large VM from tape fails

Post by IanBolton »

Hello

I am testing a restore from tape of our largest VM which we've just started taking to tape. As we all know backups are useless if you cant restore them :D .

Restoring this VM from tape, direct to vsphere, fails.

Final Error on 2nd attempt is
19/08/2022 17:39:04 Error Restore job failed Error: Timed out to wait for traffic control event.
Unable to retrieve next block transmission command. Number of already processed blocks: [40755].
Failed to download disk 'Device '\\.\PhysicalDrive1''.
Agent failed to process method {DataTransfer.SyncDisk}.

The tape being read at the time is verified in the same drive, all OK. First attempt used a different tape drive in the lib, also failed, similar error, slightly different block count.

I am able to restore other VMs from other tapes from different pools.

My gut feeling is this is a read-error, or some sort of network timeout (between tape server and VBR server to Vsphere? but no network issues AFAIK)

Case 05579146 is open but 24hrs since I last sent logs with no update, so I'm trying some more digging.

Hello,
it's hard to provide more than a gut feeling or guess on a forum, so I can only recommend to continue with support.

In general, the size of a VM is irrelevant for the restore operation.

Best regards,
Hannes

Thanks, yeah I guess you're right. I'm just trying to get ahead of the game with any troubleshooting steps which might be appropriate while I wait for support to get round to contacting me...
