Azure to AWS
Hello,
Happy New year everyone.
Question in the context of a Multi-Cloud environments :
Is it possible with Veeam to backup files from Azure to AWS and the other way round to backup files from AWS to Azure as well ?
The goal is in either case, to have backup files sent to a different CSP.
Of course Restore should be also possible seamlessly in both directions.
Other conditions are centralized management and fully automated process.

Could we get some more information on what "back up files" means? Really (NFS / SMB) file-shares shares in Azure / AWS, or is it more about virtual machines and databases (if yes, which ones)?
In general, Veeam can restore between clouds (including Amazon & Microsoft) and on-prem. But to answer the question, I need to understand what data we are talking about. Files can be copied to "everywhere"

Thanks for your feedback.
As we're both classical private Datacentre services provider as well as Public Cloud Services broker (we only serve our own organisation's customers), our users benefit from both IaaS, PaaS and SaaS possibilities, both from On-Premises and from AWS, Azure (+ some other Cloud players).
That means that our backups concern both VM files, OS level files and filesystems (indeed NFS/SMB), DB files, PaaS tools files like (that can be in proprietary formats), AWS EBS files as well as AZURE Blob Storage, so i might not seem to take the easy way in saying "everything possible, from and to everywhere" .
If Veeam is able to do that in a centralized (one single interface for all) and automated way, that would be definitely a very good point.

let's split it a bit...
1) VM files / OS level files: per default VMs / OS are backed up at image level without agents on-prem and in the cloud. That means OS level files in classic sense do not exist, because backup is block-based. Conversion between clouds is possible with Veeam (see the restore to Azure / EC2 / Google sections). If classic style file-level backup is done for VMs, then it's "just files" that can be copied everywhere (Windows explorer, SSH, whatever it is)
2) NFS & SMB: same like any other file copy: copy wherever you like. It's all just SMB / NFS
3) DB files: how and what? In general, it's like file restore. Example: SQL running in an Azure VM can also be restored to SQL running on-prem or whatever cloud VM. If it's hosted DBs (IaaS)... well, Azure SQL IaaS cannot be restored to AWS Dynamo DB for example.
4) PaaS: format is irrelevant, what are the protocols to access the files?
5) AWS EBS: we are talking about VMs again, right? Then it's point 1
6) Azure Blob storage: backing up directly from Azure blob is only possible via workarounds (mounting it to a machine and then do NAS backup like it was an NFS / SMB share). That way is limited and not sure how much sense it would make to restore for example from Azure blob to S3
I suggest to install the product and see how it can be done. As you said classic on-prem datacenter, I suggest starting with the quick start guide (also exists for Hyper-V in case you have that)

with Veeam Backup & Replication as central point, most things are possible. Backup of the VMs is done with integrations to the cloudsIf Veeam is able to do that in a centralized (one single interface for all) and automated way, that would be definitely a very good point.

In v12 it will be possible centrally in VBR to take backup copy jobs from one cloud vendor to another. For example, AWS EC2 instance would be backed up into AWS S3, and you could take a backup copy to azure, AWS, GCP, wasabi, on-prem, or anywhere really.
Along the lines of AWS you could also take a BCJ to another region in AWS, since they don’t offer geo redundant S3 copies like Azure. Recently got that request from someone else.
