replication

Post by mporliod »

hello I have a doubt, I have two vm that I reply on a vmware host.
These two VMs have 2 TB allocated disk space but 1 TB effective space.
In the destination host I also replicate the allocated or used space.

Hello,
I'm not 100% sure what the question is, but I try to answer it... I just checked the replicas in my environment and all "thin provisioned" source VMs are also "thin provisioned" as replicas.

If you see something else, please double check with support and post the support case number for reference.

Best regards,
Hannes

my question is: is the disk of the provisioned VM replicated or just the space in use.
To understand, I can make a vm with a 2 TB disk but use only 1 TB.
I replicate 2 TB that is provisioned or only 1 TB the space used.

Hello mporliod,

From this page:
During the first replication cycle, Veeam Backup & Replication copies data of the original VM running on the source host, and creates its full replica on the target host. Unlike backup files, replica virtual disks are stored decompressed in their native format. All subsequent replication cycles are incremental. Veeam Backup & Replication copies only those data blocks that have changed since the last replication job session. To keep track of changed data blocks, Veeam Backup & Replication uses different approaches.

Thanks

then all the allocated space of the VM source disk is stored.
Therefore, the secondary target host must be sized by counting the space allocated to the VMs of origin not the space used.

Hello if I do the replicas from one host to another, the two hosts must necessarily have the same version of vmware ?

Hello mporliod,

It can be different version as long as your VM’s virtual hardware version is compatible with the target host.
Thanks
