Backup Copy to SOBR - Offload Question

Post by CKESSLER »

Dear Community,

our primary backup jobs are using a SOBR. We have 30 Restore Points defined.
The Performance Tier is a local SAN Storage
The Capacity Tier is a local S3 Storage (with immutability)
SOBR is configured to copy backup immediatly to Capacity Tier
Retention is set to 30 days.

Now we defined an additional requirement.
The backups of certain VMs should be stored also in an Azure Blob Storage (~ 7 Restore Points).

I tried to fulfil this with following setup, but it does not work that way:
- Created own SOBR
Performance Tier: Same local SAN Storage
Capacity Tier: Azure Blob Storage
Checked "Move backups to capacity tier..." + "Move backup files older than 0 days"
Did not check "Copy Backups..."

- Created "Backup Copy" job for these VMs
Target: the new SOBR
Restore Points: 7 days
no GFS

Problem is, that the daily offload tasks does not transfer any data to Capacity tier.
I know that I have some kind of misconception. But I am not sure where exactly.

Does anyone have any advises how to fulfil the new requirement in the best way?

Thanks,
Chris

Hello Chris,

I think you need to enable GFS (f.e. Weekly) to apply forward incremental retention policy for the backup copy chain, otherwise, backup copy works in the forever forward incremental mode and there are no inactive chains that can be offloaded to the Capacity Tier. It's documented on this page of our help center:
The same applies to backup chains created by backup copy jobs. Veeam Backup & Replication will transfer to the capacity extent only those restore points that belong to an inactive backup copy chain. Note that if you enable backup copy GFS, Veeam Backup & Replication implements the forward incremental retention policy. If you disable backup copy GFS, Veeam Backup & Replication implements the forever forward incremental retention policy.
Thanks!

Be aware that the upcoming Veeam Backup & Replication v12 will support direct backup to the object storage repository. Starting from v12, you can create a backup copy job and point directly to the Azure Blob Storage repository (thus achieving your goal). Thanks!

Thank you very much PetrM. We adjusted GFS on the copy job and now it seems to work so far.
