Hyper-V node recovery recommendations

Post by darkhelmet »

Veeam has a different approach to backup compared to most vendors.
With 'legacy' backup solutions, you have the option for a bare metal recovery of the Hyper-V node.

What is the Veeam recommended solution for recovery of the Hyper-V nodes?

Our solution is specifically designed for virtual machines, and it can only backup virtual machines. You cannot backup and recover the host itself. In case of host disaster, the easiest thing usually is to just re-install the host. Also, remember that you can use Windows Server backup (that is included with Windows) to backup the system state. Thanks!

Sure, i understand. But that's not the answer i hoped for...

What use is a fast and easy recovery of virtual machines when there's no platform available? And reinstalling can be tedious and prone to errors.

Is veeam recommendation to use another backup solution to complement Veeam B&R? (like it does when customers require tape backup...)

Yes, and Windows Server backup is one of them.

Besides, you can run your Hyper-V host on a USB stick, that would allow you pull USB stick from the failed host and plug it into the new host and continue running VMs with minimal downtime.

[MERGED] Backup of Hyper-V Host

Post by phildotnet »

Hi All,

How do you backup your Hyper-V Hosts?

Do you backup the hosts?

I have a Hyper-V cluster running the full fat Windows Server 2012 and I am wondering whether I should backup the hosts...

Any feedback would be great!
