Migrating to Linux repository

Post by panzer »

Can I migrate my backupdata from a repository on a Windows Server to a repository on a Ubuntu server like this: Disable job - move data manualy - rescan old and new repository - change repository in job - enable job ?

Hi Stig

Yes, that's possible.
Do you have used reFS before on windows? If yes, the backup files will be copied without reFS Space Savings. Example: 12 fullbackups a 2 TB will require 24TB storage on your linux repository.
V12 will allow you to move backup files with keeping the space savings from reFS or XFS. If you can't wait with the migration, consider starting with new backup chains on the linux repo and keep the old windows repository until the restore points are aged out (reached their retention).

Thanks

Then you are fine.
I suggest using the new ubuntu repository as a hardened repository for immutable backups.
Also format the filesystem with XFS to be able to use FastClone. You will love the space savings you get with XFS (spaceless synthetic fulls).

If you want to use FastClone with XFS for the mapped backup files, you have to do an active full backup or schedule a backup file compact operation to activate FastClone for the new backup jobs.

Thanks
