Using Backup & Replication console from client PC

Post by Kei »

Hi,

I have two questions about Using Backup & Replication console.

1. Can we access to VBR from client PC using Backup & Replication console via Internet?
The bellow is my considering topology.

- I install Backup & Replication console in Client PC
- On FireWall, I set the port forwading 1.1.1.1:10000 to 192.168.1.1:9392(default port)
- I access from Client PC using Backup & Replication console to 1.1.1.1:10000

---------------
| Client PC |
---------------
|
|
---------------
| Internet |
---------------
|
| global IP: 1.1.1.1
---------------
| FireWall |
---------------
|
| IP: 192.168.1.1
---------------
| VBR |
---------------

2. If I am not permitted to access to VBR using RDP, is there any way to get VBR log file when some troubles happen?

Best Regards
Kei

Hello,
The ports from the VBR Console to the VBR Server are described here: Personally, I would never open the VBR Console Ports to the Internet, as you can face brute force attacks or worse things. And please, do not open RDP either. My recommendation would be to do some sort of VPN to a jump box you have on the same network as the VBR Server, or as a last resource, a VPN that has direct access to the VBR, but better if only can connect to the jump box over RDP and from there to the VBR, etc.

There are tons of products to do VPN, Veeam even has VeeamPN, but if not, OpenVPN, I am sure your perimetral firewall could do that, etc.

To your second question, what problems are we referring to? Failed backups? Those alerts can be triggered over SMTP, SNMP, Windows Events, etc. I think Email notifications could be enough, or at least the most basic step of all.

Hi jorgedlcruz

Thank you for reply. I understood first question.
As for second question, I consider the case that backup job or restore are failed and we need to check log files which is stored on windows C drive to resolve the failure.
So my question is how to check the log file from VBR console or we need to log in to windows server and check the log file.

Best regards.
