Backup VMs from another site

Post by adam900331 »

Hy!

I am planning a backup environment with Veeam B&R, where there are two site:
- SiteA: this is the primary site, the Veeam server is located in this site.
- SiteB: there are some VMs, what I would like to backup with Veeam from SiteA.

Thy two site is connected with S2S VPN connection.

What component do I need to deploy on SiteA and SiteB. My plan is to deploy a dedicated backup proxy on SiteB. Do I need anything else component? WAN Accelerator?

The backup repository is place on SiteA.

Thanks.

Hi Adam

WAN Accelerator only works for replica and backup copy jobs.
My plan is to deploy a dedicated backup proxy on SiteB
You can deploy a proxy on SiteB. I suggest deploying a linux vm and use it as a linux proxy.
Backup flow will be:
hypervisor storage > proxy > repository.

How fast is the connection between both sides? If it's really slow, deploy also a backup repository in SiteB. Use a copy job to copy the backups from SiteB to SiteA. Either way you could face backup job and restore performance issues.

Thanks

Hi Adam

in theory you don’t need anything if you use nbd mode backup.
But in a real world situation i would also recommend to deploy at least a proxy on side B.
If you need a wan accl or any additional veeam roles depends on your bandwidth as well as the amount of data you plan to transfer during backup. As for the wan accl it also depends if you plan to run replication beforehand.
Essentially the question will always be how long the VM snapshot remains open on side B.

Feel free to add some details

Thanks
